Obidos
Walking the ramparts, visitors
can enjoy views of windmills, vineyards and surrounding farmlands. In the residential area below, narrow cobblestone streets
are lined with whitewashed houses sporting terracotta roofs. The shops are piled high with local handicrafts, while in spring
the town is ablaze with geraniums, morning glories and bougainvillaea. Resembling an open-air museum, this walled medieval
town has been preserved to look like a picture-postcard and it is well worth spending some time meandering through the warren
of streets to get to know it better.
Alcobaça
The
magnificent and austere Cistercian Abbey at Alcobaca dominates the centre of the town and is a world heritage site. Alcobaça is a large town a few kilometres
inland from Nazaré. It is an attractive place with a lot to offer sightseers and holiday makers. The main feature of the town
is the Abbey, which proudly presents a long and sombre façade with 18th Century embellishments. The abbey is not only famous
because of its imposing presence in the centre of Alcobaça but also because of the romantic history linked to it.
Berlengas Islands
A group of very small islands off the coast of Peniche. Take a short 20 minute boat trip to the larger island (Berlenga
Grande) where there is an ancient fort and a lighthouse to explore. The turquoise waters are very clean with barrier reefs and vibrant marine life.
Caldas da Rainha
The city centre is full
of bars and cafes, lining the pretty cobbled streets and making it a great place to spend a few hours wandering around and
enjoying the cafe culture. The main square also has a daily fruit and vegetable market. Caldas has good transport links to the rest of the area including an express bus which
takes 50mins to the centre of Lisbon.
